La Conquistadora is a small wooden icon of the Virgin Mary that was the first of its kind brought to what is now the United States in 1625. It is currently housed in the Saint Francis Cathedral of Santa Fe, in the small portion of the cathedral that was part of the pre-Pueblo Revolt church of Santa Fe. Don Diego de Vargas gave her the moniker as he believed that the statue helped him in the reconquest of New Mexico. | Creator: Photographed by Edgar I. Bernal Sevilla.
